What’s Happening Today

AMD has agreed to buy AI startup World Labs for $8.2 billion, bringing one of the field's most prominent researchers into the company.

Co-founded by Stanford researcher Fei-Fei Li in 2023, World Labs develops AI models that can understand and recreate 3D environments. Li, known as the "godmother of AI", will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. The deal gives AMD a foothold in one of the next frontiers in AI with potential applications in both robotics and gaming.

The acquisition is another step in AMD's push beyond chips. Nvidia has already invested heavily in AI models and recently agreed to buy Hugging Face for around $13 billion. Both companies are using the profits from their hardware businesses to expand into the next phase of AI. For AMD, bringing Li on board could also help attract researchers who currently build on Nvidia's hardware.

AMD invested in World Labs' $1 billion funding round in February, alongside Nvidia, and had been working with the startup to train its models on AMD chips. Li described the hardware as a "natural fit". Now that partnership has turned into a sale, giving AMD a direct stake in the development of world models and a chance to shape the technology behind them.

We're getting into all of it on today's show at 12 BST.

David Reger, founder and CEO of NEURA Robotics, came on the show and explained why he thinks the world will need robots to deal with a growing shortage of workers.

By 2030, the world will have "about 120 million less human labour," he said. China is already pushing robotics to address its expected shortfall of 80 million workers, while the US, Europe and Japan face similar challenges. As Reger put it, "The only solution I know, it's robots."
