WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY
Apple has a new boss for only the second time this century as John Ternus took over as CEO on Tuesday.
The 50-year-old hardware engineer is behind many of Apple's biggest products (worked on the iPad from its inception, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro). He steps up as Tim Cook moves to a newly created executive chair role after 15 years in charge. Ternus marked day one by joining X and posting a single "hello", within three hours he had 300,000 followers. His first big outing comes next Tuesday at Apple's iPhone launch, where a foldable phone is expected.
Apple has said Cook will continue working with policymakers in Washington and Beijing, relationships he has spent years cultivating. His $47 million compensation package and expanded role also suggest he is likely to remain an active executive rather than transition into a purely hands-off chairman.
AI will be the big test for Ternus. Apple’s upgraded Siri is finally arriving with its new iPhones, but the company still trails OpenAI and Anthropic in the race to define the next generation of AI assistants. The foldable iPhone should give Apple another product cycle to monetize, with further room to push prices higher. The bigger challenge is finding what comes after the smartphone and proving Apple can be the company to build it.

We asked Hugging Face co-founder Thomas Wolf where he stands on the debate sparked by Dwarkesh’s essay and whether calling agents a “civilisation” goes too far.
"What is not important is the debate about which is the right term to describe it," he said. What matters is that people take the underlying risk seriously. "People should really understand that this mix of cybersecurity and safety questions is a very serious thing that's happening in 2026."
"Anything that helps people take really good conclusions about it is important." Particularly notable given Hugging Face was itself on the receiving end of the hack.
